Q. What is a heat pump?

A heat pump extracts heat from the air outside and brings it indoors. It's like a refrigerator in reverse. Older styles of reverse-cycle heat pumps have only two operating modes - the heat pump either works at 100 percent capacity, or not at all. But the newer inverter heat pump systems can operate at various levels up to their maximum capacity. They remain switched on and adjust their working capacity in order to maintain the room temperature. This makes them more energy-efficient than non-inverters. They usually have three or more fan speeds. On some units the fan can be used as a fan on its own, to provide air movement. Find out more...

Q. Is a heat pump the same as a ventilation system?

No. A heat pump uses refrigeration principles to shift relatively large amounts of heat in or out of a building to warm or cool it. A domestic forced ventilation system shifts warm, dry air from the ceiling space into the living space, and is designed to reduce condensation.Find out more...
