FANS AT WETA WORKSHOPS
HotChilly staff are among the 25,000 (and counting!) New Zealanders who have been involved in bringing Peter Jackson's vision to life. As part of the expansion and upgrading of the Weta Workshop Camperdown studios, they installed air conditioning in offices and extract systems in the dangerous goods workshop area and model casting room.
There were explosions aplenty in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and no doubt will be in 'King Kong' too – however, none caused by exploding fan motors. The fan extracting the flammable vapours from liquids and chemicals used to cast moulds in the workshop needed to be speed controllable – an important feature for the systems operators. However, explosion proof motors are not speed controllable. The HotChilly team identified this as a problem and solved it by using a 'motor out of airstream' fan, suitable for speed control. They also relocated the fan away from the street side of the building to reduce any potential noise nuisance for the neighbours – allowing the workshop staff to work longer hours.
